BOYS HOOPS: CLASS A ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Draymond Green, 6-7 Saginaw High

Day-Day led his team to “Back to Back” State Championships; last year he got to run the floor and play some wing but this year he was asked to go on the block and rebound. On the block Green found even more success and was a mismatch for any team to cover, he averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks but played phenomenally in the state finals by averaging 25.5 points, 17.5 rebounds, and 4 assist in the two games.

FIRST TEAM:

Dominique Buckley, 6-2 Romulus didn’t have much help but the point guard did a great job of setting up his teammates, averaged 15 points, 6 assist, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals a game.

Blake Cushingberry, 6-4 Romeo can score on the block put has a pure stroke from outside, averaged 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assist per game for a team that depended on him every night.

Eric Evans, 5-11 Detroit Northwestern the scoring point guard single handily took over games, he averaged 26 points, 8 assist, and 5 rebounds a game for the PSL Champs.

Latreze Mushatt, 6-5 Arthur Hill could have also won the utility award because he was the “heart and soul” for the Jacks while doing everything that was needed, averaged 22 points, 9 boards, 3 assist, and 3 steals a game.

Daniel West, 6-1 Saginaw High averaged 15 points, 11 assist, and 6 steals a game for the two-time Champs.  West was the team’s glue from his point guard position.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Lou Dawkins, Saginaw High received his second State Title in just four years.  Finished the season with a 27-1 record, by overwhelming the competition with his deep bench and suffocating pressure.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Jason Washburn, 7-0 Battle Creek Central averaged 14 points a game but made his presence felt with his 10 rebounds and 5 blocks a game.  The Utah commit has natural instincts to block and change shots without fouling.

UTILITY PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Adrian Hunter, 5-11 Grand Blanc last year Hunter had to score and only score.  This year the senior captain became a coach on the floor for a team that found success by starting three sophomores.  Hunter taught and did all the little things to find the “W”.  He averaged 18 points and 7 rebounds.

BOYS HOOPS: CLASS B ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Brad Redford, 6-0 Frankenmuth

WOW! Where should we even start with Redford?  His senior year was one of the most exciting seasons to follow for as long as I can remember.  This year’s Mr. Basketball winner carried his team to a 23-3 record that included an appearance in a state quarter-final. Along the way the Xavier commit averaged 27 points a game and shot 97% from the free throw line and 43% from the 3-point line.  Redford broke a few state and national records also with his high percentages.

FIRST TEAM:

Dee Brown, 6-2 Country Day Brown led his team to a State Championship last year and carried them to the quarter-finals this year.  He averaged a team high 16 points a game this season.

Shane Moreland, 6-2 Flint Powers “Sugar” averaged 19 points, 4 assist, and 3 steals a game for the state finalist.  He had the best individual tournament performance in the state.

Troy Peter, 6-4 Stevensville Lakeshore led his team with 23 points and 7 boards a game while finishing the season with a 23-2 record.

Jamie Stewart, 6-4 Livonia Clarenceville led his team to a two loss season, once in the regular season and once in the districts, while averaging 23 points, 6 boards, 2 assist, 2 steals, and 2 blocks a game.

Paul Williams, 6-3 Detroit Renaissance can score any way possible with his smooth left handed stroke.  Averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assist per game.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Tim Herman, Flint Powers in just his second season he took Powers to the State Championship game before falling to Lansing Catholic.  Finished the season with a 20-8 record against schools like OLSM, Country Day, Detroit Southeastern, and Flint Northwestern while not having a starter stand taller than 6-3.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Ian Larkin, 6-5 Detroit Renaissance

Renaissance had much success this year but most of the credit went to Paul Williams and PG Delano Collins.  While they took most of the press ink it was Larkin who did most of the dirty work from banging down low to rebounding.  Larkin averaged close to a double-double in points and rebounds and didn’t need to take many shots.

UTILITY PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Nick Jobe, 6-4 Ida

Jobe is one of Class B’s most versatile and best kept secrets.  He did everything for Ida, from defense, to rebounding, and scoring.  He played every position from point guard to center.

BOYS HOOPS: CLASS C ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Eli Redman, 6-7 Bath The school’s all-time leading scorer helped lead his team to a State Championship last year.  This year he averaged 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assist.  He’s a very vocal but positive leader and his team fed off of his energy.  He was a huge mismatch for any team as he could post up smaller players and take bigger players off the dribble.  Defensively he guarded anyone from 5-11 to 6-11.

FIRST TEAM:

Dominique Allen, 6-5 Flint Beecher led a balanced Beecher team with 14.5 points a game, whenever Beecher needed a big shot it was Allen who would make it.  Solid jump shot to go with mad hops.

Eso Akunne, 6-3 Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard skills to play out top, instincts to play the block.  Averaged 20 points, 9 boards, and 4 assist a game, led his team to a catholic league championship and the state finals.

Stephen Gould, 6-8 Kalamazoo Christian came up big for his team in the state tournament.  Gave K-Zoo that versatile inside force that was tough for most “Class C” teams to handle.

Sean Jones, 6-11 Carson City- Crystal just dominated “Class C”, C.C.C. fed off Jones all year as their offence started inside-out every time down the floor.  Averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks a game.

Holden Greiner, 6-6 Traverse City St. Francis even at 6-6 Greiner plays a combo guard for St. Francis, he averaged 20 points and 9 boards a game.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Mike Williams, Flint Beecher led Beecher to a state finals runner-up while completely turning around the program in his short time as head coach.  Beecher finished 19-8 but their record was deceiving because the Bucs battled against “Class A” teams all season.  Williams stresses discipline and hard work and it paid off for his team this season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Torian Oglesby, 6-6 Buena Vista

The athletic and energetic wing has springs in his legs.  He made it tough for any team to get to the basket against his Knights as he embarrassed the competition with monsterous blocks and dunks.

UTILITY PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Simuel Overall, 6-3 Flint Beecher

Overall was the school’s all-state quarterback and he brought that leadership, tough mentality, and playmaking ability to his hoops squad.  He played every position on the court while playing hard on both ends of the floor.

BOYS HOOPS: CLASS D ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Adrian Ledesma, 6-0 Lawrence

The 4-year varsity player led Lawrence to a 23-2 record before falling to Detroit City in the “Class D” semi-finals.  The 6-0 point guard averaged 16.7 points, 5 assist, and 4 steals a game, which was good enough to make him the school’s second all-time scorer.  What separated Ledesma from the rest of the players in “Class D” was his ability to do whatever it took to get the win.  In the regionals he showed off his defensive skills by forcing Dustin Orns and Jared Myslewiec to shoot a combined 9-of-48.

FIRST TEAM:

Nate Bruinsma, 6-3 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian led his team with 20 points, 9 boards, 4 assist, and 2 blocks while winning the State Championship.

Ray Hill, 5-10 Detroit City the most athletic player in “Class D” this year, led City to a state finals runner-up.  Has the ability to score from beyond the arc or by slamming it in someone’s face.

Dustin Orns, Tekonsha the Brad Redford of “Class D”, averaged 33.1 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assist a game.

C.J. Paquin, 6-2 Cedarville the Michael Jordan of the U.P. averaged 16 points a game to go with 5 steals, and 5 assist.  Helped lead Cedarville to consecutive Breslin appearances.
