Girl's Basketball:  All State & Awards

   

GIRLS HOOPS: CLASS A ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Britney Murphy, 5-6, Arthur Hill

The 4-year varsity player was the “heart and soul” of a Lumberjack team that has won four straight Saginaw Valley League titles and has had three consecutive state semi-final appearances.  She averaged 16 points to go with 3 assist and 3 steals on a team that was loaded with players and depth.    

 

FIRST TEAM:

Ariel Braker, 6-1, Grosse Pointe North the sophomore averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 steals a game but played her best on the big stage.  In two State Finals games she averaged 19 points, 18 boards, 8.5 steals, and 5 assist while leading her team to the State Championship. 

Juanita Cochran, 6-3, Arthur Hill as the year went on Cochran became more and more dominate.  She gave her team the inside force they needed to get to the State Finals.  She averaged 21 points a game in the State Tournament. 

Jalisa Jones, 5-3, Detroit Pershing the quick and high basketball I.Q. point guard led her team to the PSL Championship while leading her team in assist and steals and second in scoring.

Courtney Webb, 5-9, Benton Harbor the DePaul commit averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assist, and 4 steals per game.  She was the most athletic wing-guard in Michigan this year. 

Destiny Williams, 6-3, Benton Harbor the athletic junior post player blew up the stat sheet with 25 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks, 4 steals, and 3 assist per game. 

 

COACH OF THE YEAR: Rob Smith, East Lansing Looking at East Lansing’s young but talented roster, you knew the Trojans would have a chance to be good in the upcoming years.  With only two seniors Coach Smith prepared a young team quick enough to play for the State Championship.  The Trojans finished 25-2 and will be a favorite to win the State Championship next year.

Tricia Principe, 5-9, Mattawan

Alex Serowoky, 6-2, Livonia Ladywood

Diamond Smith, 6-3, Detroit King

Chaniese Turner, 5-9, Flint Northern

 

THIRD TEAM:

Klarissa Bell, 5-11, East Lansing

Kelly DeFauw, 5-7, Grosse Point North

Jordan LaDuke, 5-10, Flushing

Violet Lindsay, Arthur Hill

Alaya Mitchell, 5-6, Plymouth Salem

 

 

GIRLS HOOPS: CLASS B ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Erica Solomon, 6-2, Country Day

The Notre Dame commit completed her prep career with consecutive State Titles.  She wasn’t her teams best post player nor their best shooter but she was the team’s glue that kept everything together.  She gave Country Day a double-double every night.  She has committed to Notre Dame.    

FIRST TEAM:

Rachel Church, 5-7, Midland Bullock Creek led her team to an undefeated regular season with 16 points a game before falling to Portland in the regional final.  She’s the school’s all-time scorer with 1,405 points. 

Cheritee Green, 6-0, Wyoming Park averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds a game.  She’s just an all around force on the floor, what she gives up in height she makes up for with strength and skill. 

Lindsey Pettit, 5-9, Portland her 15 points a game led Portland to a 26-1 record and to the State Finals.  She’s the school’s all-time scorer and will play at Ferris State next year.

Kellie Watson, 6-2, Ionia missed a majority of the season with an injury but was questionably the best player in the state.  Averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds a game. 

Madison Williams, 6-7, Country Day has the most potential over any player in Michigan.  Her size is unmatchable as she controlled the paint for the State Champs.  Averaged close to 10 points, 8 boards, and 5 blocks a game.    

 

COACH OF THE YEAR: Willie Riley, Detroit Community Riley holds a 47-2 record in jut two years.  He was able to get a star-studded team to play “team” ball.  He led the Hurricanes to a 25-1 record and a State Finals appearance with only one senior on the roster.   

 

SECOND TEAM:

Brianca Adams, 5-10, Flint Powers

Amber Moore, 5-10, Country Day

Dominique Dixon, 5-9, Detroit Renaissance

Victoria McGowan, 5-4, Inkster

Nya Jordan, 6-0, Detroit Community

 

THIRD TEAM:

Crystal Bradford, 6-0, Detroit Community

Kortni Elsworth, 5-4, Goodrich

Lorreal Jones, 5-11, Detroit Renaissance

Iniquia Snell, 5-6, Detroit Community

Marrisa Taylor, 6-4, Lansing Waverly

 


 

GIRLS HOOPS: CLASS C ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Jenny Ryan, 5-9, Nouvel C.C.

The junior, and Michigan commit, has already led her Panthers to two consecutive State Titles while averaging 17 points, 6 steals, and 4 assist.  She averaged 6 steals a game but she got her hands on or deflected atleast 10 more balls per game.  She will enter next season as the favorite to win Miss. Basketball.       

FIRST TEAM:

Brandie Baker, 6-1, Flint Hamady has a gifted talent to play any position on the court.  She averaged a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards to go with 4 steals and 4 assist a game. 

Troya Berry, 6-2, Flint Hamady the Syracuse commit can also play both the post and the perimeter.  She averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Amanda Chidester, 5-9, Allen Park Cabrini another all around player that can do it all.  She scored 19 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in a State semi-final loss. 

Ali Dawson, 5-9, Galesburg-Augusta the best player on a well balanced Ram team.  Dawson helped lead the Rams to the State Finals.  She also hit the game winning basket with two seconds left in the semi-finals.   

Kelly Kretz, 5-9, Nouvel C.C. the senior wing averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds a game but her numbers hardly show her importance to her team.   

 

COACH OF THE YEAR: Kris Hengesbach, Nouvel C.C. in just her 7th season she has produces two State tiles.  She has only lost one game in the past two seasons with a schedule that includes the state’s best. 

 

SECOND TEAM:

Elizabeth Hamlet, 5-10, McBain

Jessica Racine, 5-9, Ishpeming Westwood

Rachel Sheffer, 6-1, Watervliet

Ashley Slade, 5-9, Kingsley
 

 

GIRLS HOOPS: CLASS D ALL-STATE

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Kelsey DeNoyelles, 5-10, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart

DeNoyelles is the daughter of Head Coach Mark DeNoyelles and she took that coach’s mentality onto the hardwood.  The 4-year starter has an extremely high basketball I.Q. as she led filled up the stat sheet this year with 16.5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assist a game.  The Ferris State commit led her team to a 25-2 record and an appearance in the “Class D” State Championship game.  

FIRST TEAM:

Bianca Barton, 5-7, Bloomfield Hills Roeper Another 4-year starter who filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, 6 assist, 4 boards, and 4 steals a game average. 

Jessica Duncan, 5-6, Cedarville as a junior Duncan led her team in scoring and steals while carrying the Trojans all the way to the State Semi-finals.

Kayla Gross, 5-6, New Lothrop was a senior captain for the State Champs.  She led them in scoring with 15.5 points a game while adding 5 boards a game. 

Rachel Jaksa, 5-4, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart the 5-4 point guard was tough as nails while leading the State Finalist in assist and was second in scoring. 

Ashley Root, 5-7, New Lothrop the junior was the most skilled player on the State Champs’ team.  She was second is scoring with 14 a game while leading the team in steals.

Coach of the year: Tom Kohlmann, New Lothrop Coach Kohlmann had the most balanced team regardless of class and disciplined his team to be patient and run their offense to perfection.  Nobody on the team stood over 5-8 but he was still able to deliver a State Title.

 

SECOND TEAM:

Megan Bement, 5-8, Genesee Christian

Jasmine Hines, 6-3, Central Lake

Stephanie Pung, 5-10, Portland St. Patrick

Sammy Theut, 5-6, Marine City Cardinal Mooney
